Use these prompts with the child, their family and your setting’s existing pastoral arrangements. Adapt them to the child’s age and communication needs.
Agree a gentle welcome
Ask the family and child what would make returning easier. Agree what, if anything, they want classmates and staff to know.
Choose a trusted adult
Help the child know who they can approach and how to ask for a break. Agree a suitable quiet place and who will support them there.
Keep checking what helps
Offer familiar routines with room for changes in concentration or energy. Check in without requiring the child to talk about their loss.
Plan together
Discuss difficult dates or activities in advance. Review the plan as needs change, and follow your setting’s safeguarding procedures whenever there is a concern.
